Starting your study abroad journey is one of the most exciting chapters of your life — and at SRS, we know those very first days can feel like a whirlwind. From meeting your host family to adjusting to a new culture, so much happens right after you land.
That’s why we’ve put together five simple tips to help you feel confident, prepared, and ready to make the most of your arrival in the U.S.
When you’re traveling, some items shouldn’t get buried at the bottom of your suitcase. Always keep your passport, visa documents, placement confirmation, and host family’s contact details in a small travel wallet or folder. Having these close at hand will make airport checks and meeting your host family much smoother.
Your host family is just as excited to meet you as you are to meet them. Before you travel, confirm that they have your flight itinerary and arrival time. If your flight is delayed, let them know right away. At SRS, we encourage open communication — it sets the stage for a warm, welcoming relationship from day one.
Jet lag can be tough, but don’t let it take over your first week. Once you arrive, try to get onto local time as quickly as possible: stay awake until evening, take a short walk in the sun, and get a full night’s sleep. These small steps can make a huge difference in how quickly you adjust.
Even small cultural details can make your transition smoother. Things like how people greet one another, meal times, or tipping etiquette may be different from what you’re used to. Our advice? Do a little research before you arrive. And don’t worry — your host family and SRS support team are always here to help you learn.
It’s normal to feel nervous — but every new experience is an opportunity. Whether it’s trying a new food, meeting classmates, or learning house rules, approach everything with curiosity. Many students tell us their first week, even with its challenges, became one of their favorite memories.
At SRS, we believe your arrival should be the start of something unforgettable. With preparation, patience, and support, your new home in the U.S. will soon feel comfortable and welcoming.
We’ll be here every step of the way — from matching you with a host family to checking in after you arrive — so you can focus on what really matters: learning, exploring, and growing.
